Businesses looking for a new website always ask the same two questions: how long will it take, and how much will it cost? Both answers depend on what the site needs to do. A small brochure site and an e-commerce site with payments don't do the same job, so they aren't built in the same time or on the same budget.

In this article we explain how a website project unfolds and which factors determine its timeline and cost. Our aim is to help you clarify what you need before you start collecting quotes.

A website project usually goes through five stages. First, discovery: the site's purpose, audience, required pages and competitors are discussed. Then design: page layouts and the visual language are prepared and approved. Next, development: the design is turned into fast, mobile-friendly code. Then content and testing: copy and images are added and the site is tested on different devices. Finally, launch: the domain is connected and the site is introduced to search engines.

What affects the length of these stages most is whether the content is ready. A project whose copy, photos and product details are ready moves much faster. In many projects, delays are caused not by design or development but by waiting for content.

The first cost factor is the number of pages and sections. Every page means separate design and content work. The second is special requirements: features such as multiple languages, booking or quote forms, memberships, a blog or an admin panel you can update yourself widen the scope.

The third factor is e-commerce. Product management, payments, shipping integration and stock tracking turn a site into a much larger project than a brochure site. The fourth is how custom the design is: adapting a ready-made template and designing something unique for the brand differ in both time and cost.

Then there are the invisible but important items: speed, search engine readiness, security and maintenance. A site isn't finished the day it goes live; it needs to be kept up to date, backed up and improved when needed. When comparing quotes, look not only at the starting price but at what is included after launch.

In short, the right question isn't “how much is a website?” but “what does the site my business needs have to do?” Once that answer is clear, the timeline and budget become clear too.
